Middle school to form flag corps

Mattoon Middle School Principal Jeremie Smith accepts a monetary donation of $750 from members the American Legion (Ladies) Auxiliary. The contribution will be used by Mattoon Middle School to form a flag corps similar to that of JROTC where students will learn about flag code, honor, leadership, and will become an important part of the presentation of colors at MMS and other district events. Faith Whitley, Mattoon High School Varsity Wavette, was titled the Junior Varsity (grouped by age) Grand Champion in the hip hop division at the IDTA Start the Beat competition Oct. 21 at Chatham Glenwood High School. Students unearth objects in archaeology assignment

Mattoon Middle School social science students are learning by digging. Teacher Debbie Seaman said she and her husband both grew up on farms that were in their families for several generations. To assist Debbie Seaman with an archaeology lesson, her husband began digging around the farms and found many interesting items. MHS homecoming bebops back to the 1950s

The week long Homecoming festivities ended in high gear with the annual homecoming dance. Freshmen-seniors enjoyed dancing, photos and fun during the dance hosted Oct. 7, 2017 in the MHS gym. MHS student council turned back time to the 1950s as the theme. Old 45s and albums decorated the entry way. The stage was decorated with a lighted cardboard car and soda. Students attend SEED conference

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school class traveled to Illinois State University to represent Mattoon at a SEED (Search, Empower, Experience, Deaf) conference. The students heard from other deaf college students and participated in sessions discussing future plans and how best to prepare for life after high school. Grant encourages teachers to integrate arts

Teachers who integrate visual art, drama, dance, music or a combination of those disciplines into their classroom studies may receive a grant of up to $1,000. Jamie Shortal Willis, a retired Mattoon art teacher, and her family, are encouraging teachers to integrate art in their classrooms.
